On September 27, the Department of Homeland Security posted a video to X featuring Hall of Fame safety Brian Dawkins delivering some of the most punishing hits in NFL history, set to Korn's "Blind." The caption was three words long: "Our time has come." It was in response to reports that hundreds of men had organized into a migrant caravan that was heading to our southern border. By Tuesday, the post had crossed 100,000 likes and had more than 9 million views.
Then the NFL told them to delete it.
NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed on Monday that the league had formally requested DHS remove the video, citing unauthorized use of league content. A federal agency posted a football highlight reel to make a point about border enforcement, and the NFL's first move was to call the lawyers.
DHS spokesperson Chandler Rebel responded with what may be the single most precisely crafted government press statement of the year: "DHS is playing lockdown defense at the border. We will use every Weapon at our disposal, from A to X, to keep Americans safe."

For the uninitiated, Dawkins' nickname during his legendary Philadelphia Eagles career was "Weapon X" — earned through pregame tunnel walkouts that looked like a man channeling something not entirely human and game-day collisions that sent receivers to places they hadn't planned on visiting. DHS used his full montage — the tunnel entrance, the biggest hits, the whole terrifying spectacle — as a border enforcement metaphor. It had the subtlety of a freight train. About the same impact, too.
Dawkins posted a response on September 28: "Let's be clear. I didn't give permission for my name, image and likeness to be used by anybody — by anybody." He followed up: "I have respectfully not given permission to anyone other than those I currently do business with to use my NIL."
Note how the NFL chose to frame its own complaint. McCarthy's removal request cited unauthorized use of "league content" — not player rights, not NIL protection. Content ownership. The league positioned this as a property dispute. Dawkins' actual concerns were an afterthought in the NFL's own response.
The same league that takes months — sometimes years — to resolve player conduct investigations managed to fire off a formal takedown demand to a federal agency in under 48 hours. Whatever internal mechanism exists for protecting the interests of the guys actually getting hit in those videos apparently runs on a different clock than the one tracking government posts about border security.
Rebel's "from A to X" line accomplished exactly what it was designed to accomplish. It turned the NFL's cease-and-desist into a setup. Every outlet that covered the takedown request had to also print DHS's refusal. Every story about the NFL's objection became a story about a federal agency treating border enforcement like a pregame hype video — and six figures' worth of Americans smashing the like button to prove the point landed.
We've watched the NFL spend years threading the needle on political expression. Anthem protests — navigated. Social justice helmet decals — approved. End-zone messaging campaigns — managed with the careful hand of a billion-dollar enterprise terrified of alienating any slice of its audience. But a government agency repurposing twenty seconds of Brian Dawkins highlights to make a point about national security crossed the line.
Player likenesses show up in political campaign ads, social media memes, and fan-made content across the internet every single day. The league doesn't send takedown demands to every college kid who posts a Tom Brady highlight with a political caption. The speed of this particular response tells you everything about what actually triggered it. It wasn't the unauthorized content. It was the message attached to it.
Weapon X made a career out of hits that arrived before the receiver saw them coming. DHS apparently studied the film.
