Rep. Steve Cohen, a ten-term Democrat from Memphis, Tennessee, has filed six articles of impeachment against Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. Not because Roberts has spent years being the most unreliable "conservative" on the bench — which is what our side has been saying for a decade — but because Cohen thinks Roberts is too far to the right. You genuinely cannot make this stuff up.
Apparently we've entered the phase of the Democrat meltdown where they try to impeach Supreme Court justices for doing their jobs.
Cohen, who has represented his Memphis district for ten terms and apparently ran out of other things to complain about, accused Roberts of making "arbitrary, unexplained, and inconsistent decisions." He went further, claiming "The Chief Justice allowed the Court to become a partisan force, in breach of the constitutional guarantee." He also alleged that "time and time again, the Court has violated its own principles with a pattern of interfering in elections on behalf of Republican candidates."
Translation: the Court ruled in ways Democrats didn't like, and now Steve Cohen wants to fire the umpire.
The six articles of impeachment specifically cite, among other things, the Supreme Court's decision in Louisiana v. Callais — a redistricting case — and the Court's Trump immunity ruling from 2024. Cohen accused Roberts of breaching his oath, saying Roberts acted "in placing a single person above the law" and violated his duty to "administer justice without respect to persons."
Now here's where it gets rich. Conservatives have wanted Roberts gone for years. The man has been a swing vote siding with the left on some of the biggest decisions of the last decade. He's been about as reliable as a screen door on a submarine. But Steve Cohen isn't filing these articles because Roberts drifted left — he's filing them because Roberts occasionally drifted back.
As Just The News reported, this isn't even the first time Democrats have tried this stunt. Back in 2024, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez filed articles of impeachment against Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas. That went exactly nowhere, which is precisely where Cohen's articles are headed.
For historical context, only one Supreme Court justice has ever been impeached — Justice Samuel Chase, way back in 1804. The Senate acquitted him because even then, senators understood that impeachment isn't a tool for punishing judges whose rulings make you cry.
The timing is also telling. Cohen filed these articles during a Tennessee special legislative session on congressional redistricting — called by Republican Gov. Bill Lee — that Cohen has loudly opposed. So this impeachment push has all the hallmarks of a political tantrum dressed up in constitutional language.
Here's the beautiful irony. The Republican base and a Tennessee Democrat both want Roberts gone. We think he's too squishy. Cohen thinks he's too conservative. Roberts has somehow managed to make literally everyone in American politics mad at him. That might be the one thing Steve Cohen and the MAGA base can agree on — though for very, very different reasons.
The articles are going nowhere. Everyone knows it. But at least Cohen gave us all a good laugh on a Saturday.
