Rep. James Comer (R-KY) has asked Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to testify about claims that Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has ties to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Comer wrote in a letter that came with the subpoena that the House Oversight and Accountability Committee heard from a source that there was “serious concern among DHS personnel regarding a longterm connection between Tim Walz and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).”
The letter came out just one day before Walz’s live debate with Trump’s choice for vice president, JD Vance. According to Hill:
“In particular, Comer pointed to an unclassified chat that DHS workers used on Microsoft Teams called “NST NFT Bi-Weekly Sync” that he said has important information in it, along with other secret and unclassified papers that DHS controls.” The group says that the letters stand for “Nation State Threat—National Functional Team.”
“Comer did not say what kind of worries were made about Walz’s alleged ties to China, but he did say that the information came from a source who did not want to be named.”
“The subpoena gave a deadline of October 7 to produce any intelligence information reports or regional intelligence notes since November 2023 that relate to Walz, his staff, or his gubernatorial office, as well as any conversations that took place in the Microsoft Teams group chat about Walz from July 1, 2024, to the present.”
The letter said that the group started looking into CCP involvement in the US government “long before Governor Walz was considered as Kamala Harris’s vice presidential candidate.”
“It’s very likely that the federal government isn’t doing enough to protect the United States from the Chinese Communist Party’s political warfare,” Comer wrote. “This is especially true if a state governor and a major political party’s nominee for VP of the United States has been a willing or unwilling participant in the CCP’s efforts to weaken our nation.”
After being a teacher for many years, Walz taught in China for a year in 1989 and then led many field trips there after that. Since Kamala Harris chose him as her running mate, Republicans in the House have been questioning his ties to the CCP.
