For years, conservative users on Twitter have faced increasing persecution on the platform. They’ve been blocked, banned, and secretly hidden from searches. Meanwhile, liberal users have free rein to spread hate, threats of violence, and lies.
Now a GOP lawmaker has said enough. Twitter must face the music.
It’s nothing new. Ever since the 2016—when Donald Trump defied the odds and won the election—social networks have been cracking down on conservative users. Citing loosely defined “hate speech rules,” websites like Facebook, YouTube, and others have punished users who openly support President Trump and conservative values.
These are the same websites that looked the other way, time and again, when radical Islamic terrorist groups posted content openly. The same websites that allow liberal users (often “verified” by the social networks) to abuse conservatives or send their rabid followers after them.
Liberals are allowed to spread fake news, hate speech against white people, and openly call for the assassination of the president. Rarely, if ever, do social networks reprimand liberals for doing such things.
But say that you support President Trump and the wall? Prepare to get punished.
No site is worse than Twitter, who has been caught time and again violating the access of conservative users. The most notorious tactics is called “shadow banning.” Instead of openly banning a user—thus lowering their overall user base, Twitter would simply block a conservative user’s content from showing up in searches or even followers’ feed.
The user wouldn’t even know they are being blocked from view.
Of course, Twitter would never notify a user that they’re doing this. Twitter has been caught doing this to the RNC head, as well as numerous Republican leaders and conservative voices.
It has led to a large exodus of conservatives from the platform. But for some Republicans, that’s not good enough. Twitter must be held accountable for its gross double standard.
And that’s just what’s happening today.
California GOP Rep. Devin Nunes filed a major lawsuit seeking $250 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages against Twitter and a handful of its users on Monday, accusing the social media site of “shadow-banning conservatives” to secretly hide their posts, systematically censoring opposing viewpoints, and totally “ignoring” lawful complaints of repeated abusive behavior…
Although federal law ordinarily exempts services like Twitter from defamation liability at all levels, Nunes’ suit said the platform has taken such an active role in curating and banning content — as opposed to merely hosting it — that it should face liability like any other organization that defames. Anyone that’s used Twitter in recent years will have to admit how toxic the platform has become. An army of “verified” users have been empowered to persecute and police anyone that doesn’t agree with their far-left agenda.
They’re not just spreading liberal ideas. They spew the kind of horrific, ugly, false, hateful content that not even CNN would touch (and that’s saying something).
Meanwhile, any reasonable, honest, and decent conservative voices are all but silenced. Users aren’t given a chance to hear from Trump supporters openly or honestly. All because Twitter deliberately shuts them down.
This lawsuit is the first of its kind. It is an attempt by a conservative leader to confront an influential website over its manipulative practices. Twitter isn’t like Huffington Post or CNN. It’s not a news outlet that’s protected by free press laws. It is an open platform that provides space for anyone to share their ideas.
When they deliberately shadow ban and censor users, based solely on their political views, they are violating their good faith agreement they made with users. In that way, they are undermining our society’s duty to uphold free speech as protected by the First Amendment.
Why shouldn’t there be consequences for their actions?
This lawsuit might be the first of many. If Twitter is found guilty, there might be many more cases against them. Class action lawsuits might arise, representing the millions of conservatives who have been persecuted by this platform.
The rest of Silicon Valley better take notice. They’ve spent years trying to stamp out conservative speech online. They have betrayed their customers and violated our most sacred values.
Unless they reverse course, more lawsuits might be on the way.
