Out of all the wasteful Democratic-run states, California might be the worst. They burn through taxpayer dollars, with little to show for it. Perhaps the best example of this is a project that got started over ten years ago, has cost the state (and entire country) billions, and there’s no end in sight. To stop the madness, Trump just dropped a hammer on California. Boy are they mad!
Way back in 2008, California approved a high-speed rail project. The rail was supposed to reduce the huge traffic problem faced by major California cities, by connecting them via a fast, reliable rail system. The measure approved nearly $10 billion in bonds to construction this ambitious rail.
But today, in 2019, the project is far from finished. In fact, not a single branch of the rail is even operational. California has burned through billions of dollars, with nothing to show for it.
You can imagine how a president, known for his ability to finish construction projects on time and under budget, is outraged by this. California, led by a Democratic supermajority, has proved to be totally incompetent. They took taxpayer dollars—money from hard-working Americans—and wasted it.
What’s even more shocking is that the federal government was obligated to give the state even more money—for a project that we know will never get finished. So, President Trump is dropping the hammer on them.
The Trump administration made good on its threat to cancel nearly $1 billion in funding for California’s troubled high-speed rail project after Gov. Gavin Newsom said he would scale back its scope.
In a letter Thursday to the head of the California High Speed Rail Authority, Federal Railroad Administrator Ronald Batory confirmed the move the administration had floated in February, officially terminating the Transportation Department’s agreement to provide an additional $928.6 million to help pay for the project. Of course, Gov. Newsom is freaking out. His state has burned through billions over the last ten years and can’t even finish the project. But he’s saying Trump’s move is illegal. Newsom is governor of the most-liberal state in the country. They waste billions of taxpayer dollars on needless social programs. The result? The state is overrun with homeless, illegals, and faces one crisis after another.
Yet their governor is trying to squeeze a billion dollars from the federal government, to pay for a rail that will never be made.
The federal government is justifying Trump’s reasonable decision to withdraw funds, saying California broke their end of the deal.
In a release, the FRA — part of the U.S. Department of Transportation — said California’s rail authority “repeatedly failed to comply with the terms of the FY10 agreement and has failed to make reasonable progress on the project. Additionally, California has abandoned its original vision of a high-speed passenger rail service connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles, which was essential to its applications for FRA grant funding.” [Source: CNBC]
The governor is throwing a temper tantrum, yet he was the one who abandoned the original goal of the project. This high-speed rail was supposed to help residents travel quickly and safely between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It would have reduced traffic and helped commuters in a big way.
Yet, thanks to government corruption and waste, that rail will never be made. And Newsom has the audacity to demand more money from American taxpayers.
Imagine if Trump had been hired to build this rail ten years ago. It would have been finished by now! Commuters would be zipping across California with ease. Clearly the contractors hired to do this job were just as corrupt and incompetent as California’s liberal leadership.
Newsom will not build the rail between San Francisco to Los Angeles. Instead, he wants another billion to finish a rail between two much smaller agricultural regions. Not nearly as helpful as originally planned.
California doesn’t deserve your taxpayer dollars. That much is sure. They need drastic changes in leadership, before the entire state goes under.
But will we ever see it?
