Despite the tireless efforts of our immigration enforcement, the crisis at the border continues. Thousands of migrants bombard our Southern border. So many have entered illegally, our system if overwhelmed. President Trump called out Mexico for doing nothing to help—hitting them with harsh tariffs if they don’t pitch in. Now, the Mexican president has responded.
The crisis at the border continues to be a major problem. For a long time, the liberal media had ignored it. But recently, even outlets like the New York Times had to admit it was a crisis. The only permanent solution is the border wall: which would dramatically reduce illegal entry. But Congress continues to obstruct progress.
Our Border Patrol, Customs, and ICE agencies are taxed to the limit. President Trump has even called on the National Guard to protect the border. But endless caravans of migrants continue to push through Mexico to reach our country.
Months ago, President Trump called on Mexico to help at their Southern border. The Southern border of Mexico is significantly smaller than ours. Protecting it from caravans would be much easier. All Mexico has to do is stop migrants at the border and turn them away. They have rarely done this.
President Trump announced a strict tariff on Mexican goods, if they continue to do nothing. The tariff starts at 5% and will reach a staggering 25% by October.
It seems like that was enough to get Mexico talking, because their president has released a statement.
The Associated Press reports that Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador “hinted his country could tighten migration controls to defuse U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Mexican goods,” and that he plans on engaging the White House in talks this week, which he hopes will be fruitful.
Lopez Obrador insisted, in the same news conference, that the Mexican government has ramped up immigration enforcement along Mexico’s southern border and that officials have been working diligently to turn back migrant caravans, limit the number of migrant visas issued, and capture and deport recognized criminals, including MS-13 gang members.
“The main thing is to inform about what we’re already doing on the migration issue, and if it’s necessary to reinforce these measures without violating human rights, we could be prepared to reach that deal,” Lopez Obrador said Sunday.
“We’re doing all we can to reach a deal through dialogue,” he added. “We’re not going to get into a trade war, a war of tariffs and of taxes.” [Source: Daily Wire]
Mexico’s president insisted that they have been tightening up their efforts. Really? Then why are there tens of thousands of migrants demanding asylum and sneaking over our border? Seems like Mexico could do much more by protecting their border from caravans.
But I guess the threat of a little (or big) tariff was enough to get Lopez Obrador to actually do something. A 5% tariff might be manageable, but a 25%? Forget about buying goods from Mexico! Their products would be much more expensive than ones made in the U.S. Mexico would lose billions, given enough time.
Seems like that prospect is too much to bear, so their president is scrambling to comply. He knows his country can’t survive without trade from the U.S., so he has to finally do something about the crisis.
I know many Americans feel like Mexico does nothing to help, because they appear to benefit from the illegal immigration problem in America. They let migrants pass through their country, because they’re headed for America. Mexico benefits from money sent back home from Mexican migrants in the U.S.
So, they do nothing. Now Trump is making it their problem in the form of tariffs. In fact, those tariffs might be used to fund a certain border wall. Win-win.
We’ll have to see if Mexico is good on its word and begins to enforce their border.
