The Virginia Dept. of Corrections has said that Corrections Officer Kharmishia Phillip Fields and K9 responded after convicts connected to MS-13 assaulted another prisoner. The 5-year-old K-9 died as a result of injuries she received while performing her duties.
VADOC reports that Rivian, a Belgian Malinois, died as a result of “repeated stabbing and kicking.”
“On Tuesday, April 2, three prisoners in Sussex I State Prison who are members of the MS-13 gang savagely attacked another prisoner in one of the accommodations.” According to VADOC, a fourth prisoner seemed to be overseeing the vicious attack.” After being brutally and repeatedly kicked and stabbed by the other convicts, Rivan unfortunately passed away at the institution while VADOC personnel tried to save his life.
Due to Rivan’s brave acts and Officer Phillip Fields’ training, the 4-year Department veteran and trained K-9 handler did not suffer any significant injuries. Officer Phillip Fields, the responding corrections officers, and Rivan’s efforts brought order back. After being injured in the incident, the assaulted prisoner was taken to a nearby hospital and then brought back to the establishment, according to VADOC.
The government stated that the prisoners engaged in the attack had entered the nation illegally at the time of their detention.
“El Salvador, Guatemala, and at least three confirmed MS-13 members are among the prisoners engaged in the destructive attack. “All four of the prisoners were undocumented residents of the United States at the time of their arrest and conviction, according to confirmation from the Department. First-degree murder, attempted rape, kidnapping or abduction, malicious wounding, using a firearm while committing a crime, child pornography, grand theft, and possession of a Schedule III drug are among the allegations against the prisoners. The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) stated that it plans to prosecute these prisoners to the fullest extent of the law.
According to VADOC, which stated that the dog’s “father worked for a police station in Southwest Virginia and his mother worked for the United States Secret Service,” the animal would have been 6 years old at the end of this month.
Governor of Virginia Glenn Youngkin tweeted, “May God provide his blessings to Rivan, the brave K-9 who lost his life while performing his duty in Virginia. We will hold these savage MS-13 thugs responsible.”
