It’s been a bad 2021 for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo. And it’s only March! Things got really bad when it was learned his office covered up the staggering number of nursing home deaths, thanks to one of his COVID policies. But things got so much worse when woman after woman came out to accuse him of sexual harassment.
Many of the charges took place among staff within his administration. But some of the charges go as far back as twenty years. The shocking claim have rocked New York State. Democrats quickly ganged up on the governor. A growing group has called for his resignation, including both New York senators. Republicans from NY are looking at ways to impeach him.
Despite all this, the embattled governor has refused to resign. He’s called into question the motives of the women attacking him. And he’s virtually ignored the nursing home scandal. But his stubborn determination to avoid the consequences of his actions might not matter, when the opinion of New Yorkers is factored in.
The Quinnipiac University poll shows Andrew Cuomo has a 39 percent approval rating and a 48 percent disapproval rating. This is down from the poll taken on March 4th showing the governor with a 45 percent approval rating and a 46 percent disapproval rating. According to Quinnipiac, “today’s numbers mark the lowest job approval for Cuomo since he took office in 2011.”…
Nearly 58 percent believe that the governor is not honest and trustworthy to the public…
The survey asked if Cuomo should run for reelection as governor of New York in 2022. Only 25 percent would like to see him run for reelection, and 66 percent do not want him to run again. [Source: Breitbart]
Wow, those are terrible numbers for a Democrat governor in a largely liberal state. It’s almost as if, regardless of politics, Americans don’t like it when a leader lies, cheats, and contributes to the deaths of their loved ones!
Previously, it seemed like New Yorkers weren’t all that concerned with Cuomo’s reckless behavior. Polls were released that suggested they didn’t want him impeached or to resign. But this poll is far more telling. The state is disapproving of Cuomo’s leadership and doesn’t want him back. They don’t think he is honest and trustworthy.
That should be enough for Cuomo to wake up. We haven’t seen governor approval numbers this low since… the last Democrat governor crashed and burned (see: CA Gov. Gavin Newsom).
As public opinion sours on Cuomo, expect to see even more pressure against him. Democrats now are just trying to do damage control. They probably fear that if Cuomo refuses to resign and even runs for re-election, a Republican can easily take his seat.
If they get him out now, they might be able to salvage their party’s reputation. But that’s a big “if.”
