China’s military ambitions are no longer confined to Earth. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is actively rehearsing space warfare, according to the U.S. Space Force, with satellites dogfighting in low Earth orbit—a chilling demonstration of China’s ability to perform complex, potentially hostile maneuvers in space.
Vice Chief of Space Operations Gen. Michael Guetlein revealed at the McAleese Defense Programs Conference that five Chinese satellites were observed moving in synchronized formations, mimicking combat maneuvers that could be used to disable or destroy enemy satellites. In layman’s terms? Beijing is practicing how to fight wars in space.
Guetlein didn’t mince words, calling these operations a clear sign that China is preparing for space-based conflict. According to the Space Force, three Shiyan-24C experimental satellites and two Shijian-605 satellites were seen performing coordinated movements in orbit, an exercise eerily similar to aerial dogfighting tactics. These satellites are believed to have intelligence-gathering capabilities, meaning China is not only maneuvering in space but also tracking U.S. military assets.
This revelation comes as China aggressively expands its military footprint, both on Earth and in orbit. Space Force leaders have warned for years that America’s technological edge in space is shrinking, and Beijing’s ability to neutralize or destroy U.S. satellites could give China a devastating advantage in modern warfare.
Russia isn’t far behind either. In 2019, Moscow demonstrated its own space combat tactics with a “nesting doll” maneuver, where a satellite deployed a smaller spacecraft that stalked a U.S. satellite—a clear act of intimidation.
With China and Russia rapidly closing the gap, America cannot afford to fall behind in space warfare. If the United States loses dominance in orbit, we risk losing critical satellite communications, GPS systems, and intelligence capabilities, making us vulnerable to attacks on the battlefield and even on American soil.
This is why President Trump has doubled down on strengthening the Space Force, ensuring that the U.S. remains the dominant superpower in space. China’s space dogfighting is not science fiction—it’s the next battlefield. And we better be ready.
