From the very start of the COVID panic, the worst policy implemented was the closing of schools. Even early on, we know the virus had little impact on people younger than 18 years old. Children faced virtually zero percent of contracting the disease or suffering from it.
Yet most states canceled millions of children’s educations, over vague claims of spreading the virus to adults. Even today, many kids are suffering from a lack of education, forced to make do with subpar Zoom classes that don’t even last an hour.
Many states have pushed to reopen schools, but teachers’ unions across the country have fought back. Even now, Chicago has buckled under their complaints, reversing their decision to reopen. San Francisco has even resorted to suing its own school district, over ongoing refusals to open their schools.
This comes as a new poll that reveals that 39% of voters think teachers who refuse to work should be fired or suspended without pay.
Teachers who don’t want to show up will have a harder time, now that the CDC says it’s safe to reopen.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reiterated on Wednesday that schools can safely reopen even if teachers are not vaccinated against COVID-19…
On Wednesday, the CDC weighed in again, this time suggesting that a common teachers union demand — that all teachers be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before being forced to return to classrooms — is not a necessary requirement for in-person learning to be done safely and with minimum risk of coronavirus transmission.
“There is increasing data to suggest that schools can safely reopen and that safe reopening does not suggest that teachers need to be vaccinated,” President Joe Biden’s CDC director, Rochelle Walensky, told reporters during a COVID-19 response team press conference Wednesday morning. Yes, we can all scoff at the sudden reversal of Democrats on lockdowns, now that Biden is in the White House. But the facts remain the same. The CDC says it’s perfectly safe for schools to reopen. Teachers will be fine even if they aren’t vaccinated.
The director even repeated herself by saying, “Vaccinations of teachers is not a prerequisite for safely reopening schools.”
That’s kind of a hard statement to fight back against, if you’re an entrenched member of a teachers’ union who just doesn’t want to go to work. Under the current plan, in many states, teachers work a total of one hour with kids over Zoom—that’s it. Kids are provided with virtually no oversight or instruction, compared to what they normally get during in-person classes.
Many parents have lamented the dramatic damage this is having on their children. Students are deprived, not only of education, but of socializing and extra-curricular events that are vital to their growth and development.
You can’t grow up into a healthy, normal person with just one hour of school a day. And what can we say about a generation who is locked inside, watching Netflix all day? Can we be proud of the work we are doing with our kids—if that is their childhood experience?
Teachers who put their own selfish interests ahead of the students should be ashamed. Parents and the CDC agree. Reopen the schools now or find teachers who will.
