In a recent interview, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates discussed ways to reduce global carbon emissions. The billionaire techie suggested America, along with other ‘rich’ nations, be forced to switch entirely to ‘fake beef’ to eliminate the environmental impact of red meat production.
Explaining the suggestion, Gates told the MIT Tech Review:
Oddly, for U.S. livestock, the carbon emissions per pound is greatly less compared to cows from Africa, probably because they’re less productive. We will have to use animal genetics to greatly raise reduce the amount of carbon emissions for poor countries like Africa.
And as part of the Gates Foundation’s work, we’re taking advantage of African livestock and their ability to withstand heat, and genetically mixing with the high productivity of American cows.
Do I think the poorest countries in the world will be eating synthetic beef? No. However, all rich countries should shift their demand to 100% synthetic beef as soon as possible. You’re able to get over the taste issue, and more brands are researching ways to make the taste even better. Eventually, we should use regulation to shift the demand toward synthetic beef.
Politically, the shift would be challenging. They don’t want us to use the beef label. There are all these bills that say it’s got to be called, basically, lab garbage to be sold.
While his proposal seems completely outrageous, Gates continues to laud the advances in synthetic meat and believes it will continue to rise in popularity.
