The Illegal Alien Who Stole Kristi Noem's Purse Learns His Fate

Of all the purses in all the restaurants in Washington, DC, this guy picked the one belonging to the woman whose literal job is deporting people like him. You really cannot script this stuff.

Chef’s kiss. Absolute perfection. If a Hollywood screenwriter pitched this plot, the studio would reject it for being too on-the-nose.

Here’s what happened. A 50-year-old Chilean national named Mario Bustamante Leiva — who was in the country illegally, because of course he was — walked into Capital Burger in Washington, DC last April and swiped Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s Gucci handbag. Inside were several credit cards and $3,000 in cash. Within minutes, this criminal genius was already running up charges on her stolen cards.

Pop quiz: If you’re an illegal immigrant living in the shadows, trying not to get noticed by the federal government, what’s the ONE person in America you probably shouldn’t steal from?

If you answered “the Secretary of Homeland Security,” congratulations — you’re smarter than Mario Bustamante Leiva.

And here’s the thing that makes this even better — Noem wasn’t the only victim. Leiva had been running this scheme for days, targeting women dining at DC restaurants, snatching their purses, and maxing out their credit cards before the victims could even flag the waiter for the check. He hit multiple restaurants on three separate days in April 2025. The man had a whole system. He was basically running a small business — just, you know, an illegal one. On top of the illegal residency. Layers of illegal, like a crime lasagna.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro — yes, THAT Jeanine Pirro — put it perfectly: “Bustamante Leiva came to Washington illegally to prey on citizens of the District. He methodically targeted women at restaurants, stealing their purses, and monetizing the stolen cards within minutes.”

Methodically. Targeted. Women.

This is who the open-borders crowd wants us to feel sorry for. This is who the Democrats spent four years rolling out the welcome mat for. A guy who came here illegally, set up shop as a professional purse-snatcher, and then had the unbelievable bad luck (or cosmic stupidity) to rob the one woman in America with the power to deport him personally.

We’ve been saying for years that illegal immigration isn’t just about “people seeking a better life.” It’s also about criminals who see an open border and think, “Well, don’t mind if I do.” Leiva didn’t come here to pick fruit or chase the American Dream. He came here to steal handbags from women at restaurants. That was the plan. That was always the plan.

A judge just sentenced him to three years in federal prison on three counts of wire fraud and one count of first-degree theft. And when he’s done serving his time? Deportation. Back to Chile. Do not pass Go. Do not collect $3,000 in stolen cash.

Three years feels light, honestly. The man committed serial theft, identity fraud, and did it all while illegally present in the country. But we’ll take the W. He’s locked up, he’s getting deported, and Kristi Noem’s Gucci bag will forever be the most expensive thing this guy ever touched.

You know what the real kicker is? Somewhere in a detention facility right now, Mario Bustamante Leiva is sitting in a cell wearing an orange jumpsuit, and the face on the deportation paperwork heading his way belongs to the same woman whose purse he grabbed at Capital Burger.

Welcome to America, Mario. We hope the Gucci was worth it.
