San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York was arrested by a human trafficking task force in an Ohio prostitution sting this year. Washington Commanders tight end coach Ben Steele was fired in June after a DWI arrest. Minnesota Vikings defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander pleaded guilty to third-degree DWI. CBS analyst Tony Romo got popped for operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing, open intoxicants, and refusing a breathalyzer, with a hearing scheduled for September 21.
The NFL would like you to know it has some thoughts about morality.
The league announced this week that for the seventh consecutive season, teams will stencil social justice slogans in their end zones. The 2026 options include "End Racism," "Stop Hate," "Choose Love," and "Inspire Change." Week 1 adds a "Never Forget" option for September 11. Anna Isaacson, the NFL's Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility — a title that exists, apparently — confirmed the league is "working hand-in-hand with players" to "amplify player voices" on social justice. The Blaze's Andrew Chapados reported the story under the headline that fans "probably aren't going to like" the announcement.
He's not wrong.
The NFL has now poured $300 million into its Inspire Change initiative, on top of a separate $250 million commitment over ten years to "combat systemic racism." That's over half a billion dollars devoted to telling the rest of us how to behave. The money flows to organizations working on criminal justice reform, police-community relations, and education — noble goals on paper, funded by a league whose own participants treat the law like a suggestion.
As OutKick senior NFL writer Armando Salguero documented, the arrest sheet this offseason reads like a police blotter from a mid-sized city. Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs was charged with battery in an incident involving his ex-girlfriend. Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce earned an eight-game suspension after a domestic incident arrest in February. Los Angeles Chargers guard Ben Cleveland was arrested for speeding and driving with a limited permit — his second run-in, following a prior DUI. Baltimore Ravens receiver Rashod Bateman, Denver Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper, and Los Angeles Rams offensive lineman Alaric Jackson were all involved in separate domestic incidents.
And the league's response to this parade of mugshots is to paint "Stop Hate" in the end zone.
The partnership with Jay-Z's Roc Nation continues as well, because nothing says grassroots social change like a billionaire entertainment mogul curating your halftime show. The NFL committed to this arrangement years ago and has leaned into it as proof of institutional seriousness. Meanwhile, the FBI's own data shows a 51 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents between 2020 and 2024. Hate crimes went from 7,759 in 2020 to 10,881 in 2025. Antisemitic incidents tracked by the Anti-Defamation League jumped from 2,024 in 2020 to 9,354 by 2024 — more than a fourfold increase.
Seven years of end zone slogans. Half a billion dollars spent. And the numbers got worse.
This is the seventh year. At some point, repetition stops being commitment and starts being wallpaper. The slogans don't change anyone's mind — they changed the product. Football fields used to advertise football. Now they advertise the league's opinion of its own audience.
The "End Racism" stencil will be back in September. So will the arrests. Only one of those things will get a press release.
