"Now, you would never say it that way exactly, but they would," Psaki added. "They really did, because they would put money behind it."
So the former Biden White House press secretary — the woman whose entire professional identity was built on making whatever the Democratic Party did sound totally normal and democratic — just confirmed on live television that party insiders chose the candidates. Not voters. Not the grassroots. The leadership. With money.
The context makes it even better. Psaki was analyzing the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary, where establishment-backed candidate David Crowley was running against Francesca Hong, a Democratic Socialist. Over 100,000 people had already voted in July through early voting and mail-in ballots, and as returns came in with just 51% of the vote counted, Psaki was explaining how the party's old selection machinery doesn't work like it used to. In the process, she confirmed it existed in the first place.
It's easy to see why this clip is getting a lot of attention. This is the party that spent four years lecturing the rest of us about "threats to democracy." They impeached a president over it. They launched a primetime congressional committee over it. They called half the country domestic extremists over it. And their own spokesperson just admitted, on camera, that party bosses picked the nominees and bankrolled them into position.
"In fact, party leaders pushing nominees is a negative," Psaki continued, completing the admission by acknowledging voters now actively resent the practice. Which raises an obvious question: if it's a negative now, what was it when they were doing it? A feature?
The 2024 presidential race is the exhibit nobody in the building wants to discuss. Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee for President of the United States without a single primary voter selecting her. Not one. The sitting vice president was installed as the candidate through a backroom process that skipped the entire primary system — the system Democrats claim to hold sacred.
Psaki didn't mention Harris by name. She didn't have to. Everyone watching understood exactly which recent example hung over the entire segment. The party that couldn't stop talking about "our democracy" handed its presidential nomination to someone who earned zero primary votes, and now its former spokesperson is on television explaining how that kind of thing used to be standard operating procedure.
The Democratic Socialists gaining ground in races like Wisconsin's is apparently what forced the admission. When the establishment can't control the outcome anymore, the old playbook becomes something you talk about in the past tense — not because it stopped, but because it stopped working.
Psaki built a career on circling back. This time she circled all the way back to the truth. The party that screams loudest about protecting democracy has been selecting its own nominees with donor money for decades. The only thing that changed is they can't get away with it anymore — and even their own people are starting to say so on air.
