Jaime West, Democratic candidate for Fayette County Council District 4 in Indiana, sat down for a candidate forum interview ahead of the November 3 election. When asked what she'd do if elected, her first policy proposal was two words long: "Firing all Republicans."
That was the high point.
What followed was a candidate forum appearance so disjointed it went viral over the weekend, featuring long pauses, rambling non-answers, and the kind of raw hostility toward half the electorate that most politicians at least have the discipline to keep off camera.
West wasn't shy about her feelings toward the opposition. "I wouldn't let them — I don't even talk to them. I don't like them," she said of Republicans. When pressed further, she doubled down. "What do you want me to say? I don't like being around them."

She also took time to blame her own potential constituents for federal immigration enforcement. "Y'all did this to us," West told the audience. "Y'all voted for us. You made this happen, this ICE coming into our communities, stealing people's jobs." The "us" doing the voting and the "us" being victimized appeared to be different groups, though the logic connecting them remained unclear.
West did attempt a moment of nuance. "There are good Republicans out there," she allowed. "But then there's these MAGAs, who are just racist and aren't very intelligent at all." A county council candidate calling a significant portion of her own district's voters unintelligent is a strategy, certainly. Whether it's a winning one is a different question.
Then came the threat claim. West alleged that Fayette County Sheriff Zac Jones's nephew had "threatened to blow my head off." Sheriff Jones responded to the Daily Wire with a statement that was equal parts confused and amused: "I'm not sure what she is talking about, and I'm certain she has no idea what she is talking about either." He noted he has five nieces but no nephews.
West closed out the interview with what might be the most memorable line of the 2026 midterm cycle at any level of government. After the unverified threat claim about the sheriff's nonexistent nephew, she added: "We have guns too."
Her Republican opponent, Gary Keener Jr., is running a more conventional campaign. He has the advantage of not having threatened to fire everyone from the opposing party or referenced his personal firearms arsenal during a public forum.
The footage has made the rounds across conservative media since Friday, and for good reason. We spend a lot of time covering the national figures who say the quiet part loud — the congressional members, the cabinet officials, the talking heads. But local government is where policy actually touches people's lives. It's where your water bill gets set and your neighborhood gets rezoned.
Fayette County voters go to the polls November 3. Jaime West will be on the ballot. Sheriff Jones still has five nieces.
